Origin: Eastern USA, Mexico.
Botanical characteristics: It is a compact deciduous shrub of medium sizes, fast-growing, with thin and pubescent stems. Leaves are ovate, dark green, up to 3 cm long. In late summer it bears small white flowers, tinged with pink. The blooming is followed by small round or ovoid, reddish purple fruit, gathered in dense clusters along the stems.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It adapts to any moist soil with full sun or half shade exposure. It tolerates poor soils and has an high resistance to pollution.
Use: It is cultivated for its ornamental berries. It is used in flower beds, borders and mixed hedges. It is excellent as groundcovers and suitable for urban green areas, road embankments and traffic islands.
