Botanical characteristics: It is a medium-sized, fast-growing tree with conical growth habit. It is very sinuous and has twisted branches. It has a very rough bark. Glaucous-green leaves on the upper side, silvery below. It is a dioecious plant with green-yellow male and female inflorescences in catkins, which occur in April, on separated plants.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It prefers moist soils and adapts well to drier ones but no calcareous soils.
Use: It has very decorative green and twisted branches in winter. It is used as isolated species in the meadows, on lakesides, along river banks and in moist areas.
