Salix alba var. Vitellina / Salice giallo
Species: | Salix alba L. |
---|---|
Italian common noun: | Salice giallo |
Variety: | Vitellina |
Family: | Salicaceae |
Origin: Europe, Asia, North Africa
Botanical characteristics: It is a smaller variety than the species. This plant is characterized by yellow-golden or orange-reddish branches, which are very decorative in winter.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It grows spontaneously along streams, together with Populus. It is a pioneer species, colonizing the soils that are periodically flooded. It prefers moist soils but adapts well to moderately dry soils, too. It resists pollution.
Use: It grows stump and polarded in the countryside along streams to get wicker and ligatures. In winter it is very decorative for the colouring of the young branches. A vigorous pruning every other year is necessary. It can be used in parks and gardens both alone and in groups, on moist soils. It is suitable for urban green areas, for coating wet slopes and river banks.
