Origin: Europe, Asia, North Africa.

Botanical characteristics: It is a variety with purple-red flowers.
The male catkins, yellow, are more conspicuous than female, green, ripening in infructescenses of capsules that open in June by releasing seeds provided with hairs.

Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It prefers fertile, well-drained soils but dislikes calcareous ones. It has an high resistance to drought, salinity and air pollution.
