Botanical characteristics: It is one of the most popular and spectacular flowering cherry trees. It is a fast-growing small tree or large shrub with stiff and ascending branches, which are vase-shaped initially and later enlarged. It has oval dark green leaves, bronze-colored when young, yellow-orange in autumn. In April, it has a large and showy blooming of large, deep pink, double flowers in bunches of 2-5.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It adapts to moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soils, preferably chalky, sandy and alkaline. Full sun exposure is needed.
Use: It is used singly or in groups as ornamental plant in parks and gardens or in combination with groundcover in flowerbeds and mixed hedges. It is ideal for small gardens. It is widely used in urban greenery in avenues.
