Origin: Western China
Botanical characteristics: It is a small but vigorous tree, particular for the red-brown shiny bark that peels off in thin strips. The leaves are tightly lanceolate, serrated, dark green and yellow in autumn. The white flowers appear in April, they are 2 cm broad and grouped in corymbs of 2-3 flowers. The fruits are like cherries.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It adapts to moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soils with full sun exposure.
Use: It is cultivated for its ornamental bark. It is used in parks and gardens as single plant; in lawns or flower beds as main plant.
