Origin: Europe, Northern Asia.

Botanical characteristics: It is an evergreen conifer, branched from the ground, whose growth habit can be conical or columnar. When grown it strips and takes the shape of an umbrella. The reddish-grey bark is ribbed at the bottom and peels on the upper side turning red-brown. Its needles occur in pairs and are short (5-7 cm), twisted, big, stiff and blue-green. It is a monoecious plant with male and female flowers that are separated but on the same plant. The ovoid-conical cones are green and grey or brown at maturity and have peduncle.

Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It is part of mountain pine forest, in the Alps and arid valleys, up to 1800 meters altitude. It adapts well to dry, well-drained, slightly acid soils. It tolerates heat, drought, winds, frosts.

Use: It is mainly cultivated as timber tree and used for reforestation and as windbreak or in parks and gardens as ornamental plant.
