Origin: China.

Botanical characteristics: It is a medium-sized deciduous trees that grows quickly, reaching 12-15 mt in height and has a very spreading crown. Its leaves are large, ovate, pointed and are usually not lobed but sometimes they could have 3-5 shallow lobes. The leaves are covered with a light and thick grey down on the upper surface that is velvety on the lower one. In April-May it bears large, tube-like lilac-purple flowers in abundance, which very showy, fragrant and clustered in large erect panicles. The fruits, like walnuts, are green at first and then brown, consisting in capsules that are 5 cm broad. They persist on the plant all winter long..

Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It is suitable for any deep, well-drained soil, even calcareous one. It needs full sun exposure but sheltered from cold winds. It has an high resistance to drought and pollution.

Use: It is used as an ornamental plant for its beautiful flowering. It is placed singly or in groups in parks and gardens. It is ideal for the urban green spaces. It is not suitable for trees because it does not tolerate pruning. It is cultivated for wood production.
