Origin: Mediterranean, Persia, India, Japan.
Botanical characteristics: It can be an evergreen shrub or small tree that is bushy, compact and with an erect or spreading growth habit. The leaves are long and lanceolate with entire margins. They are leathery, dark green on the upper surface and lighter on the lower one, clustered in groups of 2 or 3. It has an abundant and showy summer-blooming in terminal corymbs of large and fragrant flowers, which depending on the cultivar could be single or double and of various colours, from white to yellow or from pink to red. The fruits are capsules similar to pods containing many seeds with tufts of down.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It is a widely naturalized plant. It prefers fertile, moist but well drained soils and tolerates limestone. It requires full sun exposure and must be sheltered because it does not tolerate frost. It has an high resistance to saltiness and pollution.
Use: It is a Mediterranean plant with spectacular flowering. If used in marine resorts, it is beautiful. In parks and gardens it can be used singly, in groups, in mixed or free hedges and is suitable for small gardens, too. If cultivated in pots, it is ideal for patios and terraces. Moreover, it is finely used in public green spaces as hedges and traffic islands.
