Origin: (horticultural).
Botanical characteristics: It is an hybrid between M. denudata and M. liliflora. It is usually a shrub, but sometimes it can be a small tree. It is large, deciduous with many branches that widen. In April the spectacular flower blooming preempts the leaves one. The large tulip-like white flowers have purple rose nuances and the colour is more intense at the bottom. The pale green leaves are pointed, obovate and up to 20 cm long.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It is the most widespread deciduous Magnolia found in gardens and the easiest to cultivate. It tolerates clay soils but not calcareous ones. It is highly resistant to air pollution.
Use: It is used as a specimen plant in the middle of the lawn or associated with lower shrubs in flowerbeds.
