Origin: Mediterranean Regions.
Botanical characteristics: It is a large evergreen shrub, sometimes it can be a tree with erect, leafy and compact growth habit. The leaves are leathery, aromatic, elliptic-lanceolate, wavy, dark green and glossy but clearer on the lower surface. It is a dioecious plant, the flowers bloom on different plants with green-yellow flowers in June. The fruits are black berries, which are glossy when ripe.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: In the Mediterranean climate areas of the Peninsula, it constitutes one of the typical element of the area called “Lauretum”. It can be found wherever in the area as cultivated or naturalized. It can adapt to all types of soils, including dry and poor ones. It resists saltiness and urban pollution. It requires full sun exposure.
Use: It is mainly used as a formal or free hedge. Resisting pruning, it is also used to create geometrical shapes or as small tree. It is ideal for large pots. It is present in the typical Italian garden.
