Origin: South-eastern Europe, China.

Botanical characteristics: It is a large deciduous tree with a spreading crown, reaching 30 meters in height. Its bark is light grey and is smooth at the beginning and then ribbed. Its leaves are uneven, aromatics, composed of 5-9 ovate or elliptical leaflets with whole bronze-red margins when young and green margins when full-grown. It is a monoecious plant with male and female blooms on it. The globose fruits are composed of the husk (green and fleshy), the shell and the edible seed.

Agronomic and environmental characteristics: It was introduced in ancient times and nowadays it is cultivated for its fruits and wood. It grows well on normal limestone soils with clay but does not tolerate humidity and too dry lands.
Use: It is cultivated for its wood and fruits. It is used in rows or avenues and as a shade and fruit plant in the courtyards of country houses.
