Botanical characteristics: It is a small slow-growing tree up tp 6-8 my high, its dense foliage and branches. The light green palmate leaves have 5-7 sharp lobes and in autumn they turn yellow, orange and red. The inflorescences are composed of small red flowers built in clusters. The Samaras, whose wings form an 180 degrees angle, are dangling in some cultivars. Many varieties of this specie were selected due to their different growth habits and colour of the leaves.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: The Japanese maples need particular kinds of soil. It should be fresh, loose, moist but well-drained and slightly acidic. On the contrary it should not be heavy, chalky or with stagnant water. It is a plant that lives better in a partial shade and when it is sheltered from strong winds. They are sensitive to frost.
